Voicing Considerations—General…

There is a slight danger when first removing the plug from a recorder that an instrument may crack in the head, necessitating installation of a head sleeve. If this happens an extra charge will be incurred for installing the head sleeve. This occurs when the plug has expanded enough relative to the head that it acts like a wedge and stresses the head joint. Unfortunately, the only way to solve the problem is to remove the plug.

This is one reason instruments should be serviced regularly. If not requiring voicing, routine maintenance should include removal of the plug and removal of any excess material so the plug cannot become a hazard to the head.
